Flashlight True Life Tellers in Partnership with Tellit Festival Presents....

We are truly excited to be working in partnership with Tellit Festival, the UK’s first true life storytelling festival, to help find the UK’s best unknown true life stories and storytellers, in a nationwide Quest.

Together with storytelling clubs from across the country, such as The Moth, Natural Born Storytellers, SpeakEasy Bristol and Spark, Flashlight Tellers will be hosting Round 4 of ‘The Quest’ to seek out and send forth our representative on a national scale!

Our chosen storyteller from Round 4 will join 7 more tellers chosen by the other storytelling clubs to go forward to Tellit Festival’s Gala showcase ‘The Quest’ in London on Saturday 22nd October 2016 at Hoxton Hall.

The theme for both the Flashlight round and The Quest showcase will be ‘Lessons’
Think... The misadventures, the poignant. School, teachers, students. The lessons learnt, the ones that made you laugh or left you hurt or the ones you wish you had leaned over and over again... We want them all.

Heart warming, life affirming from the mundane to the tragic or hilarious, regale us with your stories behind some of life’s most valuable lessons.

How to pitch you story

There are only 8 places available to tell your story at our Flashlight round taking place on Friday 23rd September, so you will need to pitch your story to us in advance.

1) Alongside your Name, email and contact number, We would like the pitch to include a short synopsis of the story i.e two -three sentences on what the story is about, to

2) Ideally an audio recording of you telling the story. The story does not need to be polished at this stage and audio quality does not need to be the best (it can be recorded on your phone), it just helps us to know what the story will sound like.

3) Confirmation that you are willing and available to take part in both events on Friday 23rd September at Waterstones, Birmingham and on Saturday 22nd October at Hoxton Hall in London should you be chosen as our Flashlight Representative. (Travel expenses and accommodation will be offered for the London showcase event, for storyteller +1)

Then the rest will be down to us!
8 tellers will be chosen to perform on the 23rd September and we will be in touch to let you know if you have been selected once all pitches have been received.

Pitches to be sent to

Deadline for Pitch is Friday 9th September at Noon.

We are happy to offer support and guidance for those storytellers selected in the run up to the Flashlight round, if required.

Important Notes

  • Anyone can submit a pitch as long as you are not a professional true life storyteller i.e being paid, to tell true life stories.
  • Stories must be no longer than 7 minutes
  • You must TELL you story not read it, notes will not be allowed on stage (unless previously agreed)
  • You must be able to attend both events on 23rd September in Birmingham and 22nd October in London
  • Both events will be part filmed for showreels by Tellit Fesival

Remember this is true life STORY-telling. Its is not a rant or therapy, a standup routine or internal monologue! We want a story with a Beginning-Middle-End.

How we will choose our Flashlight Representative

All our storytelling evenings offer an inclusive, friendly and safe space for telling personal stories. For this Round of The Quest, the method for choosing our Flashlight representative will be made up of three judges.

Flashlight Teller’s amazing troupe leader and International Storyteller Cat Weatherill.
A Waterstones representative.
One audience member, chosen on the night who is not associated with any of the storytellers.

This keeps the selection fair and unbiased.

The Gala showcase in London is non competitive. It is a celebration of all the clubs, stories and storytellers taking part and true life storytelling in general.

For more guidance on true life storytelling, please take a look at our Mee Club Guide or for more information email us at

So, we need YOU and your stories and we need avid listeners and lovers of stories to come along and get involved in this amazing Nationwide ‘Quest’ Celebrating True Life storytelling in all it glory!
